Regent Brass held its Annual General Meeting for 2014 on 30th January 2014. The band was reported to be in a good shape with a stable membership. The appointment of Paul Archibald as the new MD, has given the band a confidence boost as he prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead at Stevenage, for the London & Southern Counties Championships on 16th March and, the band’s debut visit to the Spring Festival in Blackpool on 26th April. On Friday 6th December, Regent Brass hosted their annual Christmas concert at the Church of the Ascension in Wembley. This event has become a real highlight of the band’s concert schedule, providing an opportunity to perform at their “home turf” as the church also provides the rehearsal facilities for both Regent brass bands. Also performing at the concert were pianist Graeme Thewlis, who performed George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the band in 2012, and soprano Tracy King with her accompanist Li Lin Teoh, who is a regular performer at these events. On Friday 22nd November, Regent Brass headed up to Perth for the third time to compete at the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships. This year, the set work was the demanding “Contest Music” by Wilfred Heaton; a piece which was originally considered unplayable when first written! After travelling up, the band gave the work a run-out at an open rehearsal hosted by the Tullis Russell Mills Band.
