On Friday 22nd November, Regent Brass headed up to Perth for the third time to compete at the Scottish Open Brass Band Championships. This year, the set work was the demanding “Contest Music” by Wilfred Heaton; a piece which was originally considered unplayable when first written! After travelling up, the band gave the work a run-out at an open rehearsal hosted by the Tullis Russell Mills Band. Regent Community Brass once again made the trip down to The Hawth theatre in Crawley on Sunday 29th September to perform at the SCABA Autumn Contest. At this competition, bands had to play an “Own-choice” test piece in their relevant section, for which the band chose to perform Simon Dobson’s atmospheric “Penlee”, written in memory of the 1981 Cornish lifeboat disaster. For the first time in their 28-year history, Regent Brass travelled to the Lighthouse Theatre in Kettering on the 26th May to compete at the All-England International Masters contest. Performing the set work “A Kensington Concerto” by Eric Ball, the band pitted their skills against 20 elite bands from the UK, Denmark and Belgium for a prize pot of £6,250.
